Castle in the Sky
The movie has strong Future Boy Conan vibes. Looking Future Boy Conan turned up that it’s also directed by Hayao Miyazaki! It’s so retrofuturistically dystopian in a way that is both aesthetic and terrifying. The movie also reminds me of Magdalena Bay’s Angel on a Satellite. As someone who is reading Asimov’s robot series and thinking about how best to view robots, I found it intriguing that the government agent in charge of looking for the mythical island of Laputa introduced the robot to Shita as an “artificial life form,” implying that in its “operational state” it’s alive.
In the end, they did to the megalomaniac supremacist what we should to every one of his kind: they blew him up along with his tools and sent his Empire into the abyss of space.
