Last.fm is History to Me

I used to have a Last.fm account up until recently. I kept one around intermittently after initially creating one for the first time in 2019, connecting it to my Spotify and then forgetting about it for two years. After that I used it a bit but hated seeing how “horrible” the information it gave me looked like, so I started fresh with a new one. Then I started focusing too much on the numbers and had to quit it until I gave it another shot at the start of 2024. I kept that last account around until a week ago which was longer than I expected to keep it for.

All the service could offer me was a glorified Spotify Wrapped in a weekly format in its stead which was fun for a while, but not the reason I listen to music for. The Music Neighbors feature was my favorite, but also nothing more than a gimmick. In the end, it was their questionable business model and the long list of trackers their webpage used that did the trick for me. Apple Music is already gathering enough data about me. It’s unnecessary to share my music habits with a third-party and its third-parties as well.

I believe that now I’m gone for good unless their recommendation algorithm gets substantially better, even though the amounts of data they siphon out of their user base should allow for something better than whatever the heck they’re offering. Even Apple Music gives me better recommendations!
