Virgin by Lorde 🎵

Every song on this album is a bop. I really love the minimal production which is not something that many albums get right. In my opinion, it was a wise decision not to hype the album up to be something it isn’t, at least as far as I could tell. It can be whatever you make it out to be: a summer album, a party album, something akin to brat’s more introspective parts, etc.

So many variations because she didn’t have a vision, I fear, except that she’d be oscillating between genders and just sounds high as fuck. Based on the lyrics, that is. I just wish this record was longer. 35 minutes is very short. It’s almost a Mitski album, ugh.

David is one of her best songs ever. It’s actually one of the best album closers so far this year. The vocal layering combined with the electric guitar riffs (?) go hard as fuck. Not sure if it’s recency bias at it again, but I think Shapeshifter, Favorite Daughter, and Broken Glass could’ve been much stronger singles. But maybe I would’ve found the album to be a letdown otherwise. The single choices made me crave more and then the album drop satiated me.

I know I complained about the shortness of the album, but now I’m convinced the length was the best thing about it. This way every song stands on its own and doesn’t feel like a filler that is there just for the album to be longer like it was with Solar Power.
