Interstellar π₯
Rewatching this movie with my brother has awakened some awareness in me that I didn’t get when I watched this movie for the first time a few years ago. It’s mad disrespectful, out of touch, and reductionist. It’s giving a tech bro explaining why fighting back climate change is futile. All of this is so hardcore conspiracy theory fuel while still acting good natured that it makes my skin crawl.
I remembered this movie being like an 8/10, but maybe only for its time. It’s a nice drama with the quantum mechanics stuff, but it’s not even attempting to appear scientifically real. Some of the stuff feels like it was pulled out of some jerk’s ass.
So the world was destroyed beyond help and finally the people screaming for degrowth got their way because resources were getting fewer far quicker than it was worth it to grow. So degrowth happened automatically. But obviously the American settler-colonizer in the orange main character wanted to leave Earth and look elsewhere.
Because people were scrambling for food, they logically couldn’t waste resources on space exploration so they had to do it behind the curtains. But then when saving Earth suddenly became required to save his children, that’s when he started paying lip service to Earth.
This movie is so not it. Itβs great as a drama, maybe as a mystery, but sci-fi? You gotta try harder. Your American colonialism fetish and capitalist delusions have to be left behind, though.
