Music Questions Challenge
As it seems, it is challenge season and I’m here for it! Takenvault has started a music questions challenge chain and I see now Ava is already onboard, too. I’m bored so I’ll answer these questions as well.
Questions
-
What are five of your favorite albums? Preacher’s Daughter by Ethel Cain, brat by Charli xcx, channel ORANGE by Frank Ocean, Art Angels by Grimes, and SOS Deluxe: LANA by SZA. These are projects that are consistently on rotation, but not every piece of music can be played at all times. So there are projects that I play like once every couple of months that I still hold dear and enjoy a lot. So I don’t know at which point an album becomes a favorite for me.

What are five of your favorite songs? Prom by SZA, Echoes by Pink Floyd, Inbred by Ethel Cain, Girl, so confusing remix with lorde by Charli xcx, and Punish by Ethel Cain
-
Favorite instrument(s)? I used to play the guitar, but I stopped because other things in life took precedence at some point. It was an acoustic even though I prefer electric guitars.
-
What song or album are you currently listening to? My new obsession is Perverts by Ethel Cain. It’s an ambient/slowcore album that came out recently which I’ll probably cover in a post of its own.
-
Do you listen to the radio? If so, how often? No, never. I don’t think there was ever a time in my life in which I listened to the radio, let alone willingly and by myself.
-
How often do you listen to music? Pretty often, albeit not as often as I used to. I use headphones for most of my listening time and listen to music on my commutes almost all the time.
-
How often do you discover music? And how do you discover music? I don’t venture out too much. Every once in a while there’s some new music that goes on rotation, but most of the time I’m listening to the same old stuff I’ve been listening to for a while. Since switching to Apple Music, I have stopped using algorithms to find new music. Nowadays, I discover music organically, through others’ personal recommendation or because something is being discussed in whatever online space I’m in at the moment. I use an app called MusicBox that I share new music to listen to via the iOS share sheet and then listen to them whenever I feel like it.

What’s a song or album that you enjoy that you wish had more recognition? There is this older song by Frank Ocean from like 2011 called Novacane that I absolutely adore. I don’t understand how it has seen a revival on TikTok or similar platforms, yet. In terms of albums, Mitski’s debut album Lush and sophomore Retired from Sad, New Career in Business are criminally underrated. Considering her fame at this point, I’m surprised so few people have dug out those two albums. Wish they’d been on CDs because I’d buy in a heartbeat.

What’s your favorite song of all time? Inbred or Golden Age by Ethel Cain (it varies depending on my mood). Each listen shakes me to the core.

Has your taste in music evolved over the years? Definitely. I used to listen to a lot of folk music when I was little. In my teens, it was a lot of self-deprecating, depressive indie/alternative but also pop music. Then I went back to folk and jazz/rock, and now it’s a lot of r&b and electronic music. I listen to a lot of upbeat stuff that moves me. I think it’s in part due to my anti-depressants kicking in.
